Welcome to our PKU guide!

Phenylketonuria is a rare genetic disease. In the United states there are approximately 16,000 cases. PKU is an inherited disease that causes low levels of the phenylalanine hydroxylase enzyme. This causes Phenylalanine, a protein found in many foods, to build up to potentially toxic levels in the brain if it is not monitored. However, with a low protein diet, the amount of Phenylalanine can be monitored and regulated to safe levels.
